13th Annual Clean SweepClean Sweep 5

Make a substantial difference in the community by helping friends and neighbors spring clean an even bigger Burien than ever.

The city's thirteenth annual Clean Sweep on Saturday, April 30th. Volunteers participate from 8 a.m. to

1 p.m., and can enjoy breakfast, lunch and a chance to win generous prizes. Presented by the city of Burien and the Discover Burien Association, Clean Sweep is sponsored by Waste Management, Law Offices of Linn, Schisel & DeMaico, PS and Prudential NW.

Last year more than 400 people spruced up Burien's streets, parks and commercial areas. To donate, volunteer, register your group or get more information for this year's Clean Sweep, call Debra George at 206-941-7199, however everyone is welcome to attend the day of the event.

To participate, volunteers must register at the Fire District No. 2 Station at 8th Avenue Southwest and Southwest 151st Street in downtown Burien by 8 am on April 30th. A free continental breakfast & coffee will be provided.

Among the clean-up tasks are sweeping sidewalks, trimming shrubs, planting flowers and picking up trash. Participants will be provided with cleanup materials. It is recommended participants bring their own work gloves plus useful tools to aid in cleanup efforts. This year the Law Offices of Linn, Schisel & DeMaico graciously sponsored limited number of gloves for volunteers.

Businesses in Burien's main downtown area may dispose of unwanted items by placing them in the alley or in front of the establishment before 9 a.m. April 30th for pickup. If items are not picked up by noon you can call Debra George to let her know of your location and she will arrange for pick up.

In cooperation with the Environmental Science Center some clean sweep participants will be stenciling labels around storm drains as a reminder that storm water runoff drains are not waste dump zones.

In appreciation of their hard work, volunteers will be treated to a hotdog-style lunch at the firehouse contributed by the Mark Restaurant & Bar. Clean Sweep participants will also be entered into a drawing for door prizes, including a bicycle, generously donated by Prudential NW.

Also from 10am-Noon, during the Clean Sweep join the Burien community in a scavenger hunt for all ages along SW 153rd Street where seekers will be looking for newly installed banners designed by local youth artists. Brought to you in collaboration with the Burien Arts Commission.
